Polar Vortex in North America

  For the 2014 extreme weather event, see 2014 North American cold wave .   A polar vortex (also known as a polar cyclone , polar low , or a circumpolar whirl ) is a persistent, large-scale cyclone located near either of a planet's geographical poles . On Earth , the polar vortices are located in the middle and upper troposphere and the stratosphere . They surround the polar highs and lie in the wake of the polar front . These cold-core low-pressure areas strengthen in the winter and weaken in the summer due to their reliance upon the temperature differential between the equator and the poles.  They usually span less than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) in which the air is circulating in a counter-clockwise fashion (in the Northern Hemisphere). GSLV D5 launched on 5th January 2014

PM congratulates ISRO on the successful launch of GSLV D5 The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has congratulated the scientists and engineers of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for the successful launch of GSLV D5 carrying GSAT-14 payload. Commending ISRO for the successful launch, he described it as yet another important step that the country has taken in the area of science and technology. The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV-D5 was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota . It includes an indigenous cryogenic rocket stage.

National Youth Policy 2014

Introduction of National Youth Policy-2014 The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for introduction of the National Youth Policy-2014 (NYP-2014), replacing NYP-2003 currently in force. The vision of NYP-2014 is to empower youth to achieve their full potential, and through them enable India to find its rightful place in the community of nations. For achieving this vision, the Policy identifies five well-defined objectives and 11 priority areas and suggests policy interventions in each priority area. The priority areas are education, skill development and employment, entrepreneurship, health and healthy lifestyle, sports, promotion of social values, community engagement, participation in politics and governance, youth engagement, inclusion and social justice. Inculcate the Spirit of “Pehle Aap” to Make Roads Safer- Shri Vijay Chibber Countrywide Road Safety Walks Today to Make it a Social Movement All road users must inculcate the spirit of “Pehle Aap” to avoid accidents and make roads safer. This was stated by Shri Vijay Chibber, the Secretary Road Transport and Highways here this morning at the beginning of Road Safety Walk organized by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (RTH) at India Gate.The Secretary said that “Pehle Aap” attitude in “Lukhnavi Tehzib” has the potential of creating goodwill among road users, influencing their behavior on roads and as a result reducing number of road accidents/mishaps. He said the Ministry will continue with it’s efforts to reduce road accident fatalities through engaging larger communities and stakeholders in various awareness activities on road safety. --PIB
