Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

ECOSOC plays a key role in convening development actors to address a broad range of themes that contributed to preparations for a unified and universal post-2015 development agenda.

The Council and the entire ECOSOC system provide a platform for coherence, coordination, integration and inclusion and contributing to the global effort to achieve sustainable development for all.

The Economic and Social Council is also a key hub for knowledge sharing, mutual learning and review on implementation of international development commitments

In 2015, ECOSOC will support the transition to the new framework through its theme "Managing the transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the sustainable development goals: What it will take". The entire ECOSOC system will consider the 2015 theme throughout its work during the 2015 session, culminating in the ECOSOC High-level Segment (HLS) (6-10 July 2015). The HLS will provide global, regional and national policy guidance and recommendations on the transition from the MDGs to the SDGs.

  • ECOSOC, one of the six main organs of the United Nations established by the UN Charter in 1946, is the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as for implementation of the internationally agreed development goals.
